- the unemployment rate remains hi...Let's see:<br /><br />- the unemployment rate remains high and is actually masked by the fact that so many who have given up looking for work are no longer counted as "unemployed"<br /><br />- mortgage foreclosures remain at record levels<br /><br />- home prices remain flat and in some areas are continuing to fall<br /><br />- the federal budget deficit is at record levels (not to mention those of several states)<br /><br />- tax receipts at the local, state, and federal levels remain flat<br /><br />- because of flat revenues, taxes at all levels are going up<br /><br />- the regulatory burden imposed on businesses is exploding<br /><br />- local businesses are closing down left and right<br /><br />- foreign governments are not nearly so eager to buy our debt as they used to be<br /><br />- because, no one else will, the Fed is buying Treasury notes so as to intentionally spark inflation<br /><br />And yet, I am constantly hearing that the economy is improving.
